Summer Solstice Workshop

The Summer Solstice, also known as midsummer, marks the longest day of the year and is a natural turning point in nature representing the height of summer and a doorway into the second half of the year. This year it fell on Wednesday 21st June and from this day onward the days slowly start to draw in.

The Summer Solstice is a great turning point in the Earth’s yearly cycle and an excellent time to stop, be still and look back at our own unique journey since the Winter Solstice. From now until the next Winter Solstice everything on the Earth will be withdrawing within. We can use this time to focus on what we wish to nurture and develop in ourselves during the coming months.

It is a great opportunity to take stock of your life and make any changes you feel you need to make in order to achieve your goals and as such these seasonal turning points lend themselves beautifully to a yoga workshop where we make time for ourselves and start to connect with our “inner” space.

This morning’s workshop was a wonderful three hours where we gathered together as a group of like-minded souls sharing our love of yoga and making time to relax.

The first part of the workshop was built around setting an intention for the next half of the year then moving into yoga postures that were selected both to express the yang, fiery energy of summer whilst balancing with postures chosen to keep us grounded and centred, finishing with a lovely savasana to relax both body and mind. We then had a break and resumed with a look at a couple of “cooling” summer breathing (pranayama) techniques – Sitali Pranayama and Surya Bhedana – leading into a guided meditation and then finishing with a mini sound bath bringing my beautiful singing bowls out in public for the first time and then closing with a group “AUM”.

I have to say the group dynamic at this morning’s workshop was really wonderful, I could really feel that everyone was really “into” everything and really open to trying everything and as a teacher this is the best feeling to get from a group. I was especially pleased at the positive reaction to the singing bowl session, there was lots of interest and positive feedback from the way the sound made them feel and I could see for myself how deeply relaxed everyone was. It took a long time to rouse everyone after the singing bowl session so clearly it had a very deep rooted effect.

Always a pleasure leading these workshops and helping people to connect with their inner pathways. My next workshop will be a full day retreat in October just after the Autumn Equinox.

All in all a wonderful morning, spent – as always – in great company. Namaste ૐ
